Dr. Angie Botto-van Bemden, PhD, ATC, CSCS
Global Leader in Cartilage Research, Human Performance & Patient-Centered Outcomes

Dr. Angie Botto-van Bemden is an internationally recognized clinical scientist and human performance expert whose work spans exercise physiology, sports medicine, cartilage cell therapy, and the integration of patient experience data to transform musculoskeletal health worldwide. As Chair of the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) Patient Registry, she hopes to transform the registry via co-creation for use as a global real-world evidence platform that advances joint preservation science, strengthens clinical and regulatory decision-making, elevating patient-centered outcomes in cartilage repair.

With more than two decades of leadership in clinical research, sports medicine, cell and regenerative therapies, biologics, imaging biomarkers, and human performance science, Dr. Botto-van Bemden’s work bridges mechanistic physiology with functional recovery and long-term musculoskeletal health. Her contributions extend across autologous chondrocyte implantation, orthobiologics, human/sports performance and recovery, and healthy aging- shaping evidence generation and care pathways across disciplines.

She serves as Chair of the Patient-Centered Special Interest Group at the International Society of Professionals in Outcomes Research (ISPOR), guiding global initiatives that integrate patient perspectives, preference research, and health economics into value-based care and access policy. As a member of the Invest4Health Citizen and Patient Advisory Group, she contributes to European innovation strategies that advance equitable access, digital health, and community-centered healthy longevity via health promotion programs co-developed with stakeholders, including investors.

Her commitment to improving global health is further reflected through her work with the Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation (BHOF), where she volunteers in peer education and community engagement programs to advance evidence-based prevention, functional resilience, and musculoskeletal health literacy across diverse populations.

Across these roles- including continuing collaborations with the World Health Organization on ageing, bone health, and meaningful patient involvement- Dr. Botto-van Bemden is widely recognized for translating complex data/science into actionable, patient-centered solutions and for building global cross-sector partnerships that improve access, outcomes, and quality of life.

She is honored to serve on the Global Knee Summit faculty and to present the progress, impact, engagement opportunities and future direction of the ICRS Patient Registry.
